TINIAN Rep. Patrick H. San Nicolas is calling for “strong and realistic pillars of economic growth.”

San Nicolas, who is running for Tinian mayor in the November general election, said in a statement on Wednesday that the economic challenges facing Tinian are real and being felt by every family, every small business, and every worker on the island.

The floor leader of the Tinian and Aguigan Legislative delegation, San Nicolas, who is serving his third term in the House of Representatives, believes that “recovery is within reach if we focus on practical solutions, smart investments, and opportunities that put our people first.”

CNMI leaders, he said, must address the basic systems that support economic growth. He shared his vision for realistically achieving this goal:

Sustainable tourism

San Nicolas said Tinian should promote tourism that fits the island’s character. Instead of large-scale development, “we should promote heritage tourism, eco-tourism, cultural experiences, and community-based lodging,” he said. All of these, he added, will allow visitors to appreciate the island’s history, land, and people while keeping the economic benefits within the community.

Expansion of local capacity

Investing in training and apprenticeship programs will allow Tinian’s local government to prepare residents for good-paying jobs tied to infrastructure and private-sector development, ensuring that more construction dollars circulate within the local economy.

Stronger agriculture and fisheries

Supporting local farmers and fishermen with storage, transport, and market access will reduce dependence on imports and keep more money circulating locally, he said.

Remote work and small service industries

By improving internet reliability and offering skills training in digital and administrative services, Tinian can open doors for income that is not limited by the island’s geographic location.

Youth and children

San Nicolas also stressed the importance of investing in programs for youth, which he said is essential to building a stronger, more vibrant community. Activities like fishing derbies, visual arts programs, and sports provide young people with positive outlets to develop skills, express creativity, and build confidence.

“These programs not only promote a healthy lifestyle and teamwork but also instill important values such as discipline, respect, and responsibility. By supporting and expanding these opportunities, we empower the next generation and ensure a brighter future for the island,” he said.

Elders

“Our elders are the foundation of our community,” San Nicolas said. “It is the leaders’ responsibility to ensure the manamko’ are supported, valued, and cared for with dignity and respect. They have paved the way for us through their sacrifices, wisdom, and dedication.”

He said the Commonwealth must strengthen and expand programs for senior citizens, including health and wellness initiatives, cultural activities, recreational gatherings, transportation assistance, and social engagement opportunities. Programs such as health screenings, exercise classes, traditional arts and handicraft workshops, storytelling sessions, and community fellowship events can greatly enhance the manamko’ quality of life.

“Our elders are the heart and soul of our island. They are the keepers of our history, our culture, our language, and our values. Because of their sacrifices and hard work, we enjoy the blessings and opportunities we have today. It is our duty to ensure they are cared for with dignity, respect, and love,” San Nicolas said.

“No elder on the island should feel isolated or without support,” he added.
