Maisu returns to Palau

The five crewmen sailed out the canoe from the Waneday Channel after they departed from the Marina pier leaving a handful of people behind who gathered to bid them farewell that evening.

Prior to her departure for Palau, the Maisu spent a week in Yap waiting for the right time or the wind to shift back to the east so the trip would be less difficult than expected.

While the canoe was still in Yap the crew stayed with friends and relatives as the rest of them except one Palauan were all Yapese currently working as sailors on the canoe.

The decision to send Maisu along with the Hokulea’ was made because when the canoe landed in Palau and after a thorough inspection it was determined the Simeon Hokulae’ was no longer safe to make trips without the presence of another canoe unless she underwent a complete repair to bring her back to seaworthy level.
