Man arrested for assaulting partner with broomstick

Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja allowed Selepeo to post $625, or 10 percent of his bail order, and to issue a $5,625 unsecured bond.

Naraja directed the Attorney General’s Office to file information before noon on Sept. 27, 2011.

Selepeo was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after his initial appearance and bail hearing yesterday.

The court allowed Selepeo to be with his partner a day before, and a day after giving birth.

Selepeo is being held on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.

Assistant Attorney General Eileen Escudero Wisor represented the government, while the court appointed Assistant Public Defender Benjamin Petersburg as counsel for Selepeo.

Detective Peter Aldan said the incident occurred on Tuesday, between 8 to 11 a.m., on Afetna Road adjacent to the old Michigan garment factory.

Prior to the incident, Selepeo and his partner arrived at the victim’s residence in San Antonio, where the defendant and the victim’s mother discussed the Christening of the couple’s unborn child.

An argument occurred during the discussion, Detective Aldan said.

Selepeo later told his partner to go with him and leave her residence, police said.

While walking on Afetna Road, police said Selepeo told his partner that he was “mad about the conversation he had with [the victim’s] mother about the baptismal of their child.”

“Without  warning, Herman swung and struck [his victim] on the left side of her face under her left eye with a broomstick he was holding.” Aldan said.

The victim walked back to her mother’s residence and police were called.

Responding officers observed the victim to be frightened and crying, Aldan said.

The victim was escorted to her residence, where Selepeo was found, and eventually arrested.
