Murphy also slapped his partner’s daughter, police said.
Govendo remanded Murphy to the custody of the Department of Corrections after his initial appearance and bail hearing yesterday.
Murphy is being held on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, disturbing the peace, and child abuse.
Assistant Attorney General Nicole Driscoll represented the government, while the court appointed Assistant Public Defender Douglas Hartig as Murphy’s counsel.
Detective Peter Aldan said the incident occurred last Sunday, between 3 to 6 p.m. at the Rios compound in Achugao.
Murphy escaped after the incident but was arrested hours later, and was booked and detained at the Department of Corrections facility.
Earlier that day, the victim saw Murphy waiting for her in the parking lot as the victim was about to get off from work.
On their way home, Murphy stopped by Grand Market and told the victim to buy him beer.
The victim got out of the car and started walking home.
A co-worker of the victim offered her a ride home.
The victim was at her neighbor’s house when Murphy arrived, and called her back into their house.
Inside the kitchen, Murphy confronted the victim of hiding at their neighbor.
According to police, after the victim said she was not hiding, Murphy slapped her twice in the face.
The victim’s daughter started to cry. Murphy shouted at the daughter to stop crying, and slapped her too.
A neighbor saw Murphy grabbing a fist-full of the victim’s hair and with his right hand punching the victim on her head and face, police said.
The neighbor pulled Murphy away to stop him from further beating the victim.
Murphy then grabbed two kitchen knives, police said.
He was about to stab the victim when the neighbor struggled with the defendant and managed to take the knives away from Murphy who then left the residence.
Murphy returned to their neighbor’s residence, where the victim sought assistance.
Murphy again slapped his partner twice, police said, adding that the victim covered her face, and bowed forward as Murphy punched her on her forehead.
Responding Police Officers Jesse Cepeda and Rhonda John told Murphy not to leave the area as they conducted a preliminary investigation, but Murphy escaped.
Murphy was later arrested in Tanapag.
