Man arrested for beating wife

Fernando Valentine was booked and detained for assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, assault, disturbing the peace and criminal mischief.

Detective Andrea C. Ozawa stated in her affidavit that the Department of Public Safety got a call at about 9 p.m. on Oct. 24, 2008 regarding a domestic violence incident in Garapan.

A police officer was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Ozawa said she was summoned to assist in transporting the victim to safety because the defendant fled before the police officer could arrive.

The victim sustained injuries to her face, neck, arms and legs.

The couple had been married in August and investigation showed that domestic violence incidents occurred in the victim’s home in Chalan Piao, in Chalan Kanoa, Koblerville and San Antonio.

On Oct. 23, after the victim left work, she and the defendant had an argument arising from the defendant’s suspicions that his wife had been lying to him about substituting for somebody at work. The defendant left home and returned at 4 a.m. on Oct. 24, drunk.

According to the affidavit, the defendant woke the victim by pulling her left arm and pushing her, causing her injuries and bruises on her left arm.

The defendant told the victim to pack her clothes because he would leave.

Wanting no more arguments, the victim packed the defendant’s clothes.

He ordered her to follow him out to the car, which she did for fear of waking the neighbors.

Once they reached the car, the defendant kicked the victim in the abdomen, scratched her face and threatened to stab her with a screwdriver, the affidavit stated.

It added that the defendant grabbed the victim away from their residence and threw her to the ground.

The victim said he tried to stab her but he stabbed a tree instead when she begged him to stop, the affidavit stated.

She was able to talk him into going home so she could open the laptop computer and show him she was not lying as evidenced by a chat conversation.

The defendant insisted that the victim was lying — he got a pair of stainless steel chopsticks and tried to stab the victim, the affidavit stated.

It added that the defendant took the laptop and broke it, using a broken part to hit the victim’s neck and arms.

She said the defendant forced her into the car and he drove to Koblerville, all the while accusing her of having a boyfriend.

She said he hit her shoulder with a bottle of liquor.

She said she tried to pacify him. She was only able to call for assistance when she talked him into going back to her workplace and she got the attention of one of the office staff members.
