Man in assault case gets suspended sentence

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo imposed the sentence on Jose Ilo Kapileo after the defendant changed his plea during the Feb. 4 hearing.

Kapileo, who was also placed on six-month probation, was ordered to pay $120 as restitution for his victim.

He must also stay away from, and have no further contact with, his victim.

He will pay a $25 court assessment fee, a $100 fine, and perform 50 hours of community work service.

He was likewise ordered to obey all CNMI and federal laws.

Assistant Attorney General George Hasselback prosecuted the case while Assistant Public Defender Michael Brown represented Kapielo.

On June 13, 2008, Kapileo assaulted his victim, according to the criminal information filed by the Attorney General’s Office in court.
