But two men separately drowned in the waters off Sugar Dock and Tanapag over the weekend.
DPS spokesman PO2 Eric David identified the man rescued at Banzai Cliff as Anthony B. Roberts.
James Ocha, 54, was the victim in the Sugar Dock incident while Juan Doway was the Tanapag fatality.
Police said Roberts called 911 at about 11:33 a.m. on Friday while he was floating and hanging onto an orange buoy south of Banzai Cliff.
DPS boating safety personnel responded and rescued Roberts minutes later.
The victim, who was in good health at the time of his rescue, was transported to Smiling Cove.
Roberts later told police that from Banzai Cliff, he hiked down Toru Cliff where he decided to spear fish along the cliffline.
Roberts said the water condition at that time was perfect for fishing.
Minutes later, Robert said, a strong current came and dragged him farther out into the open water.
He tried swimming back toward the cliffline but the strong water current would not allow him.
Roberts decided not to fight the current but follow it, David said.
Roberts said he saw a white and blue Trophy boat about a hundred feet away traveling south, but failed to get its attention.
He then called 911.
In the Sugar Dock incident, police said witnesses thought it was a large fish they saw but it turned out to be the body of James Ocha from Chuuk.
Investigation by police showed that Judd Palacios, who reported the incident to 911, and his crew were exiting the Sugar Dock channel to conduct a check-out dive with some customers at about 1:20 p.m. on Friday.
They came across a styrofoam box floating southwest of the channel. They pulled it along side and noticed nobody was fishing around it.
As they were about to pick up the styrofoam box, they noticed a rope tied to some object below the water.
Police said the witnesses pulled the rope, and as soon as they got to the end of it they noticed another object.
“At first, [witnesses] thought it was a large fish but as it surfaced the water, it was a motionless body,” David said.
The witnesses secured the body and immediately travelled back to Sugar Dock where they called for police assistance.
In the Tanapag drowning incident, David said the body of Juan Doway, a local male, was recovered on the same night.
Police said Doway was spearfishing before he drowned.
