In emphasizing this year’s theme “Connecting the Community” of the 2011 Older Americans Months, the manamko’ were encouraged to share with their children and grandchildren the life lessons they have learned.
The governor’s special assistant for administration, Esther Fleming, addressed close to 70 senior citizens during the conference on aging in the Raraina Dining Room of the Aqua Resort Club yesterday.
She said senior citizens should share their values, traditions and way of life.
To deter diseases and to maintain a healthy lifestyle, she encouraged senior citizens to continue patronizing “organic” plants.
Fleming delivered the message on behalf of Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos who was attending a family funeral.
Other invited guests like Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Melvin Faisao and Public Health Secretary Kevin P. Villagomez failed to attend the conference.
Aging Office Director Rose Mondala said the theme “Connecting the Community” recognizes the diversity and vitality of today’s older Americans and highlights the importance of staying healthy throughout their lives.
She said the Aging Office is committed to providing a sanctuary for senior citizens to socialize, unwind and have fun.
“I will work hard to further enhance the programs at the center and will strive for a future that will better cater to the needs of our manamko’, ultimately improving their health and quality of life,” she said.
Senior Citizens Advisory Council president Teresita Sorroza discussed three important points that the manamko’ should consider. These are friendship, generosity and cleanliness.
According to Sorroza, the manamko’ should always congregate with one another, share their talents and continue to observe regular hygiene.
Office of Vocational Rehabilitation representatives Elvira Seman and Tomeko Olaitiman discussed their program that benefits senior citizens on island.
Emily Taitano, Marianas Eye Institute certified doctor assistant, told senior citizens about the services MEI offers such as eye examination, free transportation service and big discounts in services and purchase of eyeglasses.
During the program, Mondala presented the 2011 Manamko’ King & Queen: Jess Pangelinan and Sia Muna. This year’s prince is Jose I. Torres while Maryalen Conrad is the princess. The royal court members are Emerenciana Reyes, Pacita Angeles, Terry Sitae, Isabel Bodiogay, Roberto Dela Cruz, Carlito Hernandez and Hermane Faisao.
