Manglona, Ind.-Rota, wants the Rota Zoning Board, which still has no members, to create a new land use plan for commercial development along the island’s main thoroughfare.
Senate Local Bill 17-4 stated that it is necessary to maintain the pristine beach on Rota.
Tourists spots along the main road, the bill stated, should not be occupied by commercial businesses that pay little attention to aesthetics.
“Looks matter, and to tourists, unsightly development takes away the beauty and feeling of tranquility that brings them to Rota. We must keep Rota beautiful for future visitors,” the bill stated.
In a separate interview, Sen. Jovita M. Taimanao, Ind.-Rota, said right now it is the Marianas Public Land Trust that exercises authority over developments in the areas along the main road.
The local bill, she said, will give the Rota Zoning Board power over those developments as well.
