MANGO presents nonprofit sector facts and ongoing initiatives to Saipan Rotary Club

(MANGO) — The Marianas Alliance of Non-Governmental Organizations recently presented key insights on the nonprofit sector’s contributions and discussed their ongoing initiatives during a meeting of the Saipan Rotary Club. The presentation highlighted the vital role of nonprofits in the local economy and MANGO’s efforts to align with global Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs.

Shawna Babauta, MANGO’s communications and membership manager, shared that nonprofit employment is the third-largest workforce in the U.S., following retail and manufacturing, representing approximately 12.5 million jobs, or about 10% of the private workforce. These jobs are primarily concentrated in healthcare, education, and social assistance sectors, making a significant impact on the economy and community well-being.

“The nonprofit sector in the CNMI holds great potential for enhancing service capacity, especially through partnerships with public agencies,” Babauta said.

MANGO is actively encouraging its members to incorporate the SDGs into their organizational activities, aligning with the global 2030 Agenda to address critical issues like poverty, inequality, and climate change.

In her presentation, Babauta expressed appreciation for the Office of Planning and Development and their partners for laying the groundwork with the Comprehensive Sustainable Development Plan, which has been instrumental in helping MANGO align its goals with the SDGs.

Laurie Peterka, MANGO’s development & communications director, elaborated:

“The CNMI’s Comprehensive Sustainable Development Plan inspired MANGO to create the Giving Voice to Native Nonprofits project, aimed at empowering local nonprofits by enhancing statewide nonprofit data and strengthening connections between nonprofits and state planners. When the Green Grow Initiative launched, the alignment felt natural. Being invited to the table to help advance the SDGs and contribute to plans for a more resilient future for our islands aligns perfectly with MANGO’s mission.”

MANGO continues to provide essential services to the nonprofit community, including board training, financial management, and strategic planning, while also gathering nonprofit data to demonstrate economic impact and ensure transparency.

Babauta concluded by emphasizing the importance of collaboration and data in driving nonprofit growth and community development. Rotary Club members expressed interest in supporting these efforts and exploring future partnerships.
