March car sales down by 17.54%

Based on the latest reports from the Commonwealth Auto Dealers Association, brand new car sales for March dipped by 17.54 percent as island’s three car dealers sold only 47 brand new cars last month. The dealers sold 57 brand new units in March last year.

Total brand new vehicles sold last month consisted of 17 sedans, 15 trucks, one van and 14 sport utility vehicles.

Joeten Motors topped the sales last month, with 22 new vehicles sold: 8 units of Ford and 7 units each of Nissan and Kia. Joeten Motors accounted for 46.81 percent of the market share.

Microl Corp. followed with 20 brand new units sold, all Toyota, to claim a 42.55 percent of the market share.

Triple “J” Motors sold 5 brand new vehicles last month: two units each of Mazda and Hyundai, and 1 unit of Suzuki, for a 10.64 percent market share.

Based on a year to date comparison, total sales for brand new vehicles declined by 28.02 percent for the first three months of the year. A total of 131 brand new vehicles were sold from January to March, compared to 182 sold during the same period last year.

Vehicles sold for the first quarter consisted of 50 sedans, 33 trucks, 8 vans, 35 sport utility vehicles and 5 “others.”

Sales for brand new cars went down by 38.24 percent in January this year compared to the figure for the same month last year. The number went down by 26.32 percent in February compared to the sales in Feb. 2010.

The three dealers also sold a total of 17 used vehicles last month. Joeten Motors and Microl Corp. sold 6 used cars each while Triple “J” Motors sold 5.

The dealers sold a total of 61 used vehicles from January to March.

Joeten Motors is the island’s distributor of Nissan, Ford, Honda, Kia and other car brands. Microl Corp. sells Toyota and Chevrolet, while Triple “J” is the local dealer of Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki, Mazda and other brands.
