Marianas Bikini Open contestants conduct beach cleanup

Event organizer Sharmaine Casquero said  as early as 7 a.m., the candidates, composed of six young males and six females, began filling several trash bags with soda and beet cans, plastic bags, bottles, nylon fishing lines and rope.

“During the cleanup, we instilled in the candidates the importance of disposing the trash properly before leaving the beaches to preserve the cleanliness, and to make it presentable for the other users,” she said.

Last Saturday, Casquero said the candidates  picked up trash during their pictorial at Ladder Beach.

Only 10 contestants were chosen from the two screenings held early this month but two more signed up and were qualified.

The contestants will be presented to the public on Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. during a fashion show  at the Hard Rock Café in Garapan.

Casquero said  the contestants will present costumes made from recycled materials and swimwear sponsored by 67O Shop, Docomo, D&Q Ltd., Monster and Pepsi.

“We are inviting everyone to witness the presentation on Feb. 6 and the coronation night on Feb. 12 at the Hard Rock Café,” Casquero said.

Entrance is $10, inclusive of one drink and part of the proceeds will be given to the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance in CNMI.

Casquero said  a strong interest and advocacy in environmental issues was the main consideration during the selection of the contestants.
