May is Older Americans Month

Before the arrival of the McDonald’s mascot, the senior citizens were performing song numbers with musician and Aging Center program director Walter Manglona and Jess Pangelinan.

These were part of their special program  for the Older Americans Month proclamation signing held at the center.

Citing this year’s theme, “Age Strong, Live Long,” senior citizens vowed to continue  observing a healthy lifestyle and participating in center activities.

Aging Director Rose Mondala said she has introduced a lot of changes to their programs, most specifically in their food preparation.

She said they now have more physical activities for the manamko’ and have scheduled an outreach program with the 130 homebound senior citizens.

At the center yesterday, Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos signed the proclamation designating May as Older Americans Month.

“Our older citizens of today and tomorrow promise to be among the most active and involved old adult populations in our nation’s history,”  the proclamation stated.

It is crucial that communities modernize systems of care to help empower older Americans and give them more control over their own lives, the proclamation added.

Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Melvin Faisao said the community can help further improve the quality of life of the senior citizens.

The proclamation was read in three languages. Rosario Ibanez read the English version; Susana Santos, Chamorro; and Joaquina Kaniki, Carolinian.
