Mayor: Camacho, Sablan are SHEFA board members

The board’s former consultant, William S. Torres, said the two are not “recognized” as board members.

“Why didn’t he correct it in the beginning?” asked the mayor, who appoints SHEFA board members.

Torres has argued that the nominations of Camacho and Sablan were not confirmed on time by the Saipan and Northern Islands legislative delegation.

He also said that board, under then-chairwoman Felicidad T. Ogumoro, adopted a resolution declaring two vacancies on the board, and affirming only the membership of John K. Tenorio, Jose Leon Guerrero and Ogumoro.

But Flores said when the resolution was adopted, Ogumoro had already resigned from the board.

Therefore, he added, the resolution was null and void.

The current vice speaker, Ogumoro had to resign because the CNMI Constitution prohibits  a lawmaker from serving in any other government position.

Flores said he has accepted Ogumoro’s resignation and nominated Jose Mafnas, whose appointment was confirmed by the Saipan and Northern Islands legislative delegation on Tuesday.

Flores said he doesn’t know why Torres is questioning the membership of Camacho and Sablan.

He said Torres, as the then-adviser of the SHEFA board, allowed the names of Camacho and Sablan to be included in the scholarship program’s official letterhead and newsletter.

In its recent meeting, the SHEFA board decided to hire a permanent administrator and not renew the contracts of Torres’s Marianas Pacific Network, and Sue Dris’ Dris Student Services. Each contract was worth $40,000 a year.

Flores said his chief of staff Jeff Tamokane is now SHEFA’s acting administrator.
