Sinapalo Elementary School: Home of the Lu’ao

As a valued employee of Sinapalo Elementary, Mr. Atchico is continuously moving from repairing fixtures, doors, tables, and chairs; alongside his job order request of building maintenance repairs from plumbing to electrical units.  The staff finds this man to be of wondrous talent and privileged to have such a well rounded and hard working skills man.

As witnessed by all that come in contact with him.  He portrays a joyful character with a smile to start off the conversation.  Having compassion for all, caring for what he does best is maintain the cleanliness of the school grounds; obedient to the assigned duties and responsibilities of his daily routine.  Mr. Atchico is considered an honorable man for his dedication, hardworking and untiring contribution in doing his very best with confidence.

There has not been one thing known that Mr. Atchico has not been able to come up with a solution, remedy, or solving of a maintenance problem in his quest of ingenuity at its best.  Given the opportunity and task at hand, teachers have witnessed his insightfulness in taking action to observable situations or concerns pertaining to his field of expertise.

If it is broken, he will fix it, attitude.  Need not I be told; I just do it!

Under challenging conditions, he never gives up at trying his best, if a barrier arises, he finds ways to climb over, go around, under, and/or through that barrier.  That’s what makes this man a valuable asset to our Public School System.  His attitude towards life defines not only who he is, but the quality of life he will have.

Nevertheless, the Lu’ao Family will always be thankful for all that he has done, and all that he continues to do in making Sinapalo Elementary School campus his utmost priority in beauty, safety, and orderliness.  Providing the best conducive atmosphere for all the children attending “The Home of the Lu’ao” as they love and enjoy their learning environment.

Outstanding Support Staff

Mr. Demy Catubay has worked with Sinapalo Elementary for the past five years to present.  Mr. Catubay, an Administrative Assistant/Technology Personnel and School Aide for Sinapalo Elementary School, Rota had totally given himself (time and services) to the many tasks and extra duties as assigned entrusted to him.  Mr. Catubay humbly lives up to his commitment and leadership.  His involvement with Sinapalo Elementary such as STUCO, Tween Talk, accreditation, and HIV/Health team puts Mr. Catubay a rare personnel within the system.  He is one member in the education community that had exhibited tremendous support and services to the students as well as the staff and faculty of Sinapalo Elementary School.   His openness to learn more and become a better personnel is a quality that reflects a true leader.

We, Sinapalo Elementary School staff and parents are ever grateful for all that Mr. Catubay brings to the Rota students, teachers, staff, and the community. We strongly feel that Mr. Catubay is an outstanding support staff and deserves to be recognized as such.

Mr. Mack E. James, commonly called “Mr. Mack,” has displayed dedication, determination, and a willingness to help others in his role of Related Service Technician for Special Education at Sinapalo Elementary School.  “Mr. Mack James goes beyond the requirements of his position, making sure that student learning and productivity is steadily increased.  Continually learning for himself, he has attended trainings in Autism services, alternate assessment processes, Renaissance learning, as well as many other Professional Development training. He has led the initiative for SOLO Literacy Suit, training other teachers as well.  Also involved in Flash Math programs that utilize technology to collect and analyze data at Sinapalo Elementary School, he has benefited students and co-workers as well.

Mack James does not stop at the boundary, he finds way that his talents can be utilized.  As STUCCO advisor, he is busy helping students reach their potentials in leadership capabilities.  He is often called upon to organize various activities sponsored by the STUCCO leadership, such as, monthly flag ceremonies, Halloween, Christmas, Spirit Week, Thanksgiving, and Easter Activities as well as others.

During previous years, Mr. Mack James has initiated and developed soccer games and activities, baseball, and other physical activities to help students to become healthy and productive citizens. As advisor for the YEAH program, he has increased healthy-eating habit awareness among the students as well as involving students in this program in leadership capacities and roles.

One of the special activities that Mr. James is involved in is that of CPR Instructor, training others in this life saving technique.  He has been trained in Emergency Management resulting in FEMA disaster certificates.

Whenever “Mr. Mack” is asked for assistance, whether by teachers, staff, administration, students, or parents, he is willing and able to assist.  He has been in the PSS system since, where he has worked at all three schools on Rota.  He enjoys working at the elementary level, seeing improvements in all students.  When a student is struggling with academics, he is able to find, locate, and utilize various manipulatives helping students to increase their learning level and helping to modify lessons to create the best results.  He is consistent with students, and has high expectations of his students, which becomes evident in the learning growth.

Excellent performance

As a teacher at Sinapalo Elementary School for eleven years, Ms. Lorna Calvo has continuously demonstrated an excellent performance in carrying out her duties and responsibilities to be an outstanding and effective teacher.  She is a teacher who cares a lot about her students and is committed in nurturing the minds and talents of students. She makes sure that her students are in a safe, orderly, and conducive environment where they can enjoy learning. Ms. Lorna Calvo tries every opportunity to integrate what she teaches with other subjects and connects it to the real world so that learning can be meaningful and fun. Daily motivational and interactive approaches is her way of helping students learn how to love, enjoy, appreciate, and understand the purpose of learning. Ms. Lorna Calvo believes that being a teacher is about having fun, experiencing pleasure and experiencing the rewards she gets from the learning outcomes of her students.

Ms. Lorna Calvo not only reaches out students but also goes beyond the classroom setting and reaches out parents and the community. She is presently an active member of the Chamorro Dictionary Thematic Group, Project Familia, a mentor for novice teachers and School Leadership Learning Community. She has given numerous workshops to teachers and parents to promote student achievement. Ms. Lorna Calvo is a teacher who shares resources to other teachers. She is a very helpful and reliable person at school. She has a good sense of humor who makes her peers laugh and enjoy the school environment.

Ms. Lorna Calvo is a teacher at heart, a mentor, a friend, a good role model, a life saver, and most of all a person who changes the lives of our students.
