Megarr says he tries to enforce leave, OT rules

BRUCE Megarr, Commonwealth Utilities Corp. deputy director for water and wastewater, said he is properly enforcing the policy on the leave and overtime of workers in his division.

Since he assumed his post, Megarr said four employees were forced to resign for failure to meet the expectations of management.

However, one of them continues to report for work because Megarr’s recommendation was reversed.

“We recently tried to fire a repeat offender but it was reversed by Mr [Antonio] Muna,” Megarr said, referring to CUC’s executive director.

Asked to elaborate, Megarr said  Muna “refuses to take action.”

Megarr said he also suspended for 15 days without pay one employee for successive absences without official leave.

Megarr said he always asks for documentation regarding the leave of absence being applied for by a worker.

Just recently, he said, one employee was under investigation for using his vacation time after a leave was taken.

Another one, he added, was subjected to a drug test after his vehicle figured in an accident.

It’s the policy that whenever anyone gets into an accident he or will be subjected to a drug test, he said.

“There’s protection going on. I don’t know about it. I treat people equally as I possibly can. I have no agenda. I am new to the island relatively,” Megarr added.
