Merger an ‘insult’ to Republicans

Deleon Guerrero said they welcome anyone to join the GOP but added that “there is a fundamental difference between Republican principles and what the Covenant Party or the governor wants.”

He noted that the governor  wants to dissolve the Covenant Party, which he founded, and merge it with his former party, the GOP.

“Here in the GOP we can’t do that. No one in the Republican Party can do that. We need to go get the consensus of the party members to do anything like that,” he said, referring to the proposed merger.

He said the merger is the governor’s idea and he doesn’t think GOP leaders and members should be forced to accept it.

The GOP will hold a general membership meeting at the Garapan Central Park on Dec. 21 to discuss the merger proposal.

Deleon Guerrero also disclosed that party officers called for a meeting with elected Republicans but because it was a last minute call, only three of them were able to attend.

Deleon Guerrero said during the meeting, he and two other  House Republicans insisted that all elected GOP officials,  precinct club chairmen and the general membership should be consulted first before making any decision on whether to accept Fitial’s offer.
