MHS council starts school supply drive

Upon learning this, the Marianas High School Community Council is launching its first school supply drive to help students in need of the basic necessities to succeed with their academic goals.

Joeten Enterprises, National Office Supply and the Rotary Club of Saipan have joined the Council by donating school supplies and now the council, is asking for the community for help.

“Unfortunately, there are many students at MHS who come to school without basic school supplies, such as pencils and notebooks.  Out of 1,200 students attending MHS, roughly 700 are on the low-income free meal program and many of these students struggle to have their families provide them with the supplies they need to complete their studies,” said MHS principal Karen Borja.

The MHS School Supply Drive, with the help of MHS teachers and counselors, will identify the students most in need and will distribute the materials in a fair manner on campus.

The council is inviting the community, MHS alumni and parents to make small donations of school supplies by stopping by any of Joeten Supermarket stores in Susupe, Garapan, Dandan or Kagman or National Office Supply and dropping the school supplies purchased there into the MHS School Supply Drive boxes at the stores.

“We are also asking parents to donate used back packs and shoes to give to students who need them,” said Borja.  “We would like to thank Joeten Enterprises, National Office Supply and Saipan Rotary Club for their support.”

The MHS School Supply Drive ends on May 5, 2010.

Donations of school supplies, backpacks or shoes could be dropped off to the MHS Student Services Office in Susupe.
