MHS launches sidewalk safety project

The community council actively involves parents, teachers, and community members in discussion, planning, and evaluation of activities.

The community, parents and alumni are encouraged to participate by bringing a bag of cement and placing it on the pallets along the school’s main parking lot.

“The whole idea is to revitalize our community in getting involved,” MHS principal Craig Garrison said.

“Everyone will see that line of cement bags grow and it will help energize our efforts in seeing that our community does care and they are a big part of the improvements going on at MHS,” he added.

“As the islands’ oldest public high school, Marianas High School suffers from old infrastructure, including a line of sidewalks that are cracking and splitting at unsafe levels,” he said.

The project will fix outdoor locations for sports or drills, areas for drop off and pick up as well as pathways until basic standards are met.

MHS vice principal for activities Christine Tudela said the project is “needed and should be done no matter what.”

“It is every one’s responsibility to make sure that safety measures are met for our children, parents, staff and all stakeholders. We are moving forward with this project and we will work hard to make sure it happens soon!”  she added.
