MHS student attends summer program at Yale University

Adeleyah Charlotte Chutaro Mojica, 16, participated in the Junior Statesman of America’s Summer School program from June 21 to July 27.

Mojica, daughter of Wolf and Tokie Mojica, described her experience as “an eye opener” and “very rewarding.”

“It is basically a summer school but you get the opportunity to learn, live, and experience college life for a few weeks at some of the major universities in America — Yale, Princeton, Georgetown and Stanford.”

She said she’s lucky to attend the Yale University program.

She took one government class and one speech class and participated in several campus activities.

Adeleyah Mojica said she will forever value the lessons provided to them by CBS News’ Katie Couric, NBC News’ Brian Williams, and former Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, D-N.Y., America’s first female vice presidential candidate.

“At first, I really had absolutely no interest in politics at all but I was told by many that the program was a great experience and that I would really enjoy it, so I attended the program and it sort of opened my eyes to realize that politics is extremely important, even if you don’t like politics,” she said.

“The program gave me a much better, broader view of the world and a better understanding of my capabilities. I realized that on Saipan, for many students, there are so many opportunities out there, we just have to go find them and follow through,” she added.

The other Saipan students who participated in the program were Karen Lee of Mount Carmel School and John Yoon of Marianas Baptist Academy.

“It was an awesome experience and I recommend it to all who are interested and willing to put in the effort. I’m so happy I went and if I had to do it again, I would. It is a great opportunity to learn and start to see more of this big, big, world,” Adeleyah Mojica said.

She is an active member of the MHS Canoe Club, the girls soccer team, the National Honor Society, the Student Council, the International Thespian Society, the Music Club, the Junior Statesmen of America, Saipan Teen Talk and the Saipan Pacific Winds Band.

She’s also an active volunteer for sporting events such as Tagaman and XTerra, as well as Beautify CNMI! activities.
