Dame Carol Kidu has spearheaded efforts to bring more women into PNG’s parliament, with strong support from the prime minister and the opposition leader.
She has made three cabinet submissions, the last of which has been accepted, to get approval to use a clause in the constitution to allow three nominated women MPs.
The prime minister and the opposition leader will review a shortlist of female candidates for the positions on Tuesday.
“I’ve noted changing attitudes appearing in my colleagues. In the beginning the feedback from the general colleagues, the backbenchers was ‘You’ll never get this through,’ ” Dame Carol said.
“Now I’m starting to notice a change, but I hope there’s enough change to get it through. I hope that after this session of parliament we may have three more women on the floor.”
