John Oliver DLR. Gonzales, the library’s executive director, said the students’ homeroom teacher and adviser Rosiky F. Camacho came over last month and planned everything with CNMI Forestry, of the Division of Agriculture.
Yesterday, the Mt. Carmel students walked from their school to the library.
Around 40 participated in the activity, which included planting trees and rearranging the library computers.
“We should take care of nature and we should make sure not to litter, damage the plants, or step on them. We want our island to be beautiful,” said Savana Manglona, an 11th grade student.
“I learned how to plant a tree,” said Juan Taitano, another 11th grade student.
“We planted about 60 to 80 plants on average,” said James Babauta of CNMI Forestry.
With him were Jason Tenorio, Arnold Kapileo and Donald Kileleman.
They provided the students with technical assistance and the plants.
They also used their equipment to dig the holes so the students could easily plant the seedlings.
Toi Celis and John San Nicolas, who work for Rep. Eli D. Cabrera, also assisted the students.
“We are very thankful and grateful,” Gonzales said. “This is a continuous commitment on the part of our community to support their own library here on Saipan. Not only are we here to provide information but we also want to make sure that the aesthetic surroundings are beautified and pleasing to those who visit the library.”
