N. Islands mayor favors no deadline for submission of land applications, permits

He said House Bill 16-127 will benefit his constituents who are qualified to avail of the Homestead Waiver Act.

“I am happy that the Legislature sees the need to do away with the time limitation imposed (by current law) and with its passage, many of our people who qualify under the Homestead Waiver Act, particularly, the people in the Northern Islands will now realized the fruit of what they have work so hard for the title of their properties,” the mayor said.

Under Public Law 14-66, as amended, the time limitation was increased from 12 to 25 years after Feb. 1, 1981.

Taisakan said he has consistently opposed the idea of placing s limitation which he described as “too short and limited.”

“It will deny and deprive our people in the Northern Islands the title to the land that for so many years, they have lived and worked so hard and for that reason, I recommended that it should be amended,” the mayor said.

The bill was introduced after lawmakers acknowledged that certain persons were not included on the list and such claims would have been time barred.

The bill will allow the Department of Public Lands to remove the time limitation on the review of homestead claims.
