The federally funded natural resources management scholarship program aims to promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers in managing natural resources. The program also seeks to provide current public and private sector employees with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills and to enhance their career and professional development.
“This is one of only a few scholarships available to part time students, so those who have full time jobs and want to take classes in the evening can still take advantage of the scholarships,” said Ross Manglona, acting dean of NMC’s Community Programs and Services.
The program is designed to offer an associate of science degree, preparing student to pursue or advance careers requiring a broad background in agricultural, marine, environmental, and natural resources management, or to transfer to a related baccalaureate degree program at other colleges or universities.
The scholarship program will provide 10 full time students with about $1,200 (each) and 15 part time students with about $600 (each), amounts of which are sufficient to pay for all tuition costs per semester (Fall 2010 and Spring 2011).
Scholarship selection will be based on merit and financial need. The scholarship funds will be also be awarded on the basis of the applicant’s community involvement, academic background, letter of recommendation, and a written essay. An interview may also be required.
To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen (or green card holder) and a CNMI resident for the past three years; be accepted and enrolled as a part-time or full-time student at NMC; have a high school or college cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better; and, be able to demonstrate financial need.
