New location of stage, beer garden, big prizes for Liberation Day

On Wednesday, the committee led by Hopwood High school principal Jonas Barcinas agreed to move the stage to the right corner across from the main Garapan road.

The committee members also considered placing the stage at the center of the activity area.

But Bill Bezzant, who was tasked to make the site layout and present a stage location proposal,  said the right corner is very appropriate and could accommodate enough space for the entertainers, visitors, and guests.

The new location of the stage, the committee said, will also allow for a “beer garden,” a new feature in this year’s celebration.

Larissa Flores, chair of the committee on concessionaires, is currently negotiating with the vendors for the beer garden.

The committee agreed that the beer garden is a better way to serve alcohol as it will eliminate the possibility selling it to minors.

The committee has yet to discuss with the vendors whether canned or bottled alcohol will be sold in the area.

Flores said concession applications will be available on Monday.

Compared to last year, concessionaires will pay less for their booths.

The committee agreed that Sabalu Market farmers will be charged $200 only.

Booths offering games and selling food and beverages will pay $600 each.

Last year, the fees ranged from $800 to $1,200.

But Bezzant said the Department of Public Works will also require each vendor to pay $25 for a certificate of occupancy.

Each vendor, moreover, must have a working fire extinguisher.

Barcinas said he has asked Joeten Motors to sponsor a car  as grand prize for the Liberation Day raffle draw.

He encouraged committee members to reach out to more potential sponsors for prizes.

If there would be more in-kind prizes, the committee may give away nightly prizes during the carnival festivities.

Each of the Liberation Queen candidates will be given 2,000  tickets to sell.

Queen committee chair Tina Pangelinan said there are four candidates who have committed to join the pageant.

The deadline for other candidates to submit their applications  is on May 7.
