New NMC Faculty Senate president wants to look into hiring procedures

“I just want to make some clarifications in the hiring procedure,” Larry Lee said.

He  said he will push for the revision of  human resource policies and the grievance procedure.

At present, any complaints and concerns have to go through four stages before reaching the NMC president’s table.

As Faculty Senate president, Lee, the acting business department chairman, and will serve as an honorary member of the NMC board of regents.

Lee said NMC’s employment contract is already “outdated” and need to be revised.

He said he will pursue the “unfinished” business of the previous faculty leadership, which includes securing long-term contracts for faculty and employees of the college.

Currently, all NMC employees and staff are on two-year contracts that can be terminated or not renewed by the president, with or without cause.

The Faculty Senate has been pushing for indefinite contracts to provide job security to all college personnel.

If management is not agreeable to the indefinite contract proposal, Lee said he will negotiate for a long-term employment contract.

Frank Sobolewski, Lee’s predecessor, believes that the contract issue will be tackled by NMC’s management after the college reaffirms its accreditation.

Sobolewski said the Faculty Senate can submit its recommendations regarding the contract system.

The Faculty Senate, he added, should also ask the regents  to determine the goals of the NMC president in the next evaluation cycle.

The board, he said, should solicit inputs from faculty, staff, students and the  management council.

During the recent Faculty Senate election, Barbara Merfalen was named vice president while Joan Dubrall was chosen to be the secretary.

The Faculty Senate members are Soboleswki, Lyte Chappap, Marian Tudela, Cynthia Deleon Guerrero and Judy Torres.
