In a special meeting yesterday, all seven board members voted to waive their honorarium which ranges from $60 per member for a regular meeting and $30 for a special meeting.
“We’re in the state of exigency and we feel that the suspension of honorarium is our way of giving back to the college community,” acting board chairman Charles Cepeda told Variety.
Hundreds of dollars can be saved by the college each month, he added.
“The amount is not minimal when you add what all the seven members get for every meeting that we have — every penny now counts for NMC,” he added.
Because the board has to meet as often as necessary, Cepeda said they can now discuss more pressing issues about the college.
He said the suspension will last until the college reaffirms its accreditation.
Since WASC placed NMC on a “show cause” status, the board has been meeting almost twice monthly.
However, the regents from Rota and Tinian will continue to be paid for their airfare and per diem.
