In a statement yesterday, her office said the meetings also discussed how to resolve the audit findings and questioned costs for audit year 2007 — which are also a concern of the accrediting commission.
Fernandez personally and immediately responded to the questions from the federal representatives.
She also provided them with updates and progress reports.
She likewise shared information about the college’s efforts to institute internal controls to ensure compliance with grant requirements.
According to her office, the meetings took place on Dec. 15 and 16.
“Given the limited local sources of funding, federal grants play an increasingly central role in the college’s efforts to carry out its mission,” said Fernandez in a statement, adding that her trip to Washington, D.C. “is essential to ensuring that the federal funds we have been receiving continue.”
While there, Fernandez also met with representatives of the National Science Foundation to discuss plans for the second NSF workshop that will take place in the CNMI in July 2009.
The first workshop was held in Dec. 2007.
