
(NMC) — Northern Marianas College and Right to Democracy are set to host a conversation on democracy, equity, and self-determination in U.S. territories with legal experts from American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the American Memorial Park Visitor Center Theater.
Right to Democracy is a national advocacy group that seeks to overcome historic obstacles faced by the U.S. territories. The organization hosts conversations and events around the country focused on confronting the colonial framework governing people in U.S. territories.
The panel of legal experts includes Charles V. Ala’ilima, Esq., co-counsel, Fitisemanu v. United States (American Samoa); Pamela Colon, Esq., co-counsel, Borja v. Nago (U.S. Virgin Islands); Neil Weare, Esq., co-director, Right to Democracy (Guam); and Kimberlyn King-Hinds, Esq., local counsel, Tinian Women Association et al. v. United States Department of the Navy et al. (CNMI).
Moderated by NMC Associate Professor William J. Fife III, Esq., the panel will discuss recent developments in federal law and policy, as well as efforts to build solidarity across U.S. territories.
