NMC to use $1.2M in federal grants on staff development

NMC stands to receive $3.9 million as its share of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Of this amount, NMC will spend $226,126 in 2009 for the professional development of faculty and staff, which includes travel and per diems.

For 2010, NMC will allocate $220,000 for the professional development of faculty and staff and the purchase of laptops for faculty.

In 2011, $200,000 will go to the professional development of staff and faculty.

In its report, NMC said due to funding limitations,  it has not been able to afford attendance and participation in off-island conferences and specialized training for its employees.

“As a result, continuous improvements with our programs have for many years lagged behind new standards and practices established at U.S. higher education institution,” NMC said.

Those who are listed to travel abroad for its  professional development activities and specialized training are two members of the board of regents, the NMC president, staff of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, staff of the Information Technology Department, officers of the Associated Students of Northern Marianas College, staff of the Counseling Programs and Services, staff of the Office of Admission and Records, and staff of the Community Programs and Services.

“The immediate need to seek an infusion of resources from external sources is due in part to the lack of local resources and support coupled by the increased demands from the institution’s accrediting body, [the Western Association of Schools and Colleges],” the college said.
