NMI honors Aghurubw

Mass was celebrated by Father Jess Reyes  in the Carolinian language, and Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, who just arrived from Washington, D.C related the experience of Chief Aghurubw to what the local government is now experiencing.

He said like Aghurubw, the government is trying hard to lead the CNMI out of economic distress.

Aghurubw, who is buried on Managaha, brought his people to Saipan after their island, Satawal, in Yap was hit by a typhoon.

After the Mass, food was served.

“I am so happy with the turnout,” Carolinian Affairs Executive Assistant Angie Ignoef Mangarero said.

She thanked members of the community who helped prepare  for the celebration and donated food.

She also expressed appreciation for Tasi Tours for providing transportation to the people who went to Managaha.

The occasion was not only a cultural celebration, but also served as a way for families to bond together, Mangarero said.

“My family is here,” said local resident Sandy Hambros.

He said he and his relatives usually see each other only once a year during the annual celebration on Managaha.

“The celebration serves as a reunion for our family,” said Jay Palacios. “We are here to relax, swim and eat while visiting the chief’s tomb.”

A Japanese tourist said he and his girlfriend enjoyed the celebration and are eager to see more cultural events.

“The food is delicious,” he added.
