House Minority Leader Oscar M. Babauta, Covenant-Saipan, said the CNMI Constitution is very important as it “basically established the islands’ political relationship” with the U.S.
“We are reminiscing this occasion because this is a testament that we have become a full-pledged member of the American political family,” he told the Variety.
Babauta said the people of the commonwealth should try to learn more about their civil duties and rights as Americans.
Frances Sablan, the chairwoman of the Commonwealth Election Commission, said every resident in the CNMI should reflect on the importance of the Constitution.
She noted the occasion coincides with the Feast of the Immaculate Concepcion.
PO3 John Mendiola and Sgt. Vicente O. Tagabuel said the CNMI government should have community activities during Constitution Day to educate the people about their islands’ political history and its significance to their future.
“Our Constitution is very important. It protects our rights, the public rights. We have to celebrate this day,” Mendiola said.
