NMI to lose millions of dollars in Compact-Impact aid

Pula, who is on island on official business, said this is based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest enumeration project.

The FAS are the independent nations of Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia — Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap.

Since 2005, the CNMI has been receiving more than $5.1 million in Compact-Impact reimbursements for hosting FAS migrants.

Pula warned this will sharply drop next fiscal year.

“This last enumeration wasn’t good for the CNMI because they have less Micronesians,” he added.

“Because of the decrease in the number of Micronesians here, the CNMI is going to lose some of the money from  Compact- Impact that used to come here. As far as the money is concerned, the CNMI stands to lose between $2 million to $3 million in FY 2010,” he added.
