THE Northern Marianas Technical Institute, in partnership with the Office of Planning and Development and the Department of Public Works, launched its solid waste management training program on Tuesday.

In August last year, DPW, OPD, and NMTech signed a memorandum of understanding that aims to meet the educational, training and workforce needs of the CNMI for solid waste management.

NMTech specialized programs educator Benjamin Babauta told DPW Secretary Ray N. Yumul that the training will tentatively conclude on May 1, 2025.

Training sessions, Babauta said, will be held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the NMTech campus.

Among the 24 participants are DPW staff members, including four from Tinian and four from Rota.

Babauta said the program “aims to provide essential training and skills to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of solid waste management practices across our islands.”

He said the curriculum includes transfer station operations, landfill operations and safety.

“We are excited to invest in our current workforce and upskill them in various operations within [DPW]. This program is designed to equip them with the necessary knowledge to address solid waste management challenges and contribute to sustainable practices within our communities,” Babauta said.

He thanked DPW for its commitment to enhance the CNMI community’s waste management system.
