RB Camacho
SAIPAN Mayor Ramon “RB” Camacho said his ongoing village residential cleanup initiative is now focused on Oleai/San Jose.
“The village cleanup in Oleai/San Jose started on Tuesday and will continue for the next two weeks,” Camacho said in an interview Wednesday.
He is requesting residents of Oleai/San Jose to take out and segregate materials they need to dispose of and place them in an area that can be easily accessed by the mayor’s office equipment.
“This cleanup initiative aims to maintain and beautify our island,” Camacho said. “My concerns are about the safety and health issues in our villages,” he added. “The rusted metals and overgrown vegetation around the villages negatively impact our environment. These are breeding grounds for insects, pose health and fire hazards, and provide hiding places for criminally minded individuals to monitor the movements of residents.”
Camacho said for the cleanup initiative to work, “we need all the community to work together for the benefit of all of us.”
He said he is again “humbly requesting the community to join us in promoting safe villages, a clean island and a healthy community.”
Camacho said he is also collaborating with the governor’s office in creating a taskforce for village inspection.
“That is forthcoming for the villages where we have conducted a cleanup: Chalan Kanoa, San Antonio, Dandan, San Vicente and Tanapag,” he said.
He is also asking residents from these villages to refrain from stacking debris, such as rusted tin roofs, near public roads, as his office is still working on a schedule for picking up these materials. He added that strong winds could blow debris, potentially damaging properties or, worse, injuring someone.
