NMTI: Reopening of classes in September still tentative

In an interview, she said NMTI has not recalled its 23 furloughed employees because the trade institute still has no funds.

With the approval of the NMTI board of trustees,  its employees and instructors were furloughed in April.

“We have not yet received the $200,000 [in CW funds] we requested from the CNMI Department of Labor in June,” McPhetres said.

“But our employees are volunteering to come back to get things moving,” she added.

McPhetres said she intends to meet with CNMI Labor Secretary Vicky Benavente to ask for the $200,000, which will pay for the employees’ salaries and instructional services, including transportation and student registration.

For FY 2020, McPhetres said NMTI received $450,000 only of the $2.4 million that the trade school was supposed to get.
