No Democratic gubernatorial candidate this year

The dismayed party chairman, Manny Sablan, told Variety that he is resigning his position but will remain a Democrat.

Sablan met with the party’s remaining officers on Tuesday and announced his resignation. However, the officers requested that he stay on until they can find his replacement.

The Democratic Party officers are Meling Chargualaf, Nobert Mendiola, Henry A. Torres, William Borja and Pete Arriola.

In an interview yesterday Sablan said he doubts there will be someone who will come forward to lead what was one of the CNMI’s two major parties.

He said he has given up waiting for any individual who wants to run under the Democratic Party.

Sablan said he is disappointed with those who continue to claim they are Democrats but are not doing anything for the party.

He said instead of lending a hand, some of the individuals responsible for the splits in the past are  critical of the current party leadership.

Sablan said “fruit bats” are very common in CNMI politics. “They are those who jump from one party to another, where ever there is money,” he added.

Sablan said the party leadership has  been waiting for letters of intent since last month.

He said the reason he is still hanging on is that he owes the party.

“I won two times under Democratic Party,” said the former House member.
