Northern Islands typhoon victims arrive on Saipan

“The people are fine and in good spirits,” Red Cross emergency services director Juan D. Tenorio said. “We will be helping them move on and leave the tragic event behind.”

Red Cross conducted preliminary interviews with the victims to assess their needs, he added.

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and the Salvation Army are also providing assistance to the victims.

The Salvation Army has provided canopies, cooking materials, canned goods, food, towels and clothes to the victims.

The Red Cross and the  Salvation Army are accepting in-kind or cash donations.

Cash donations are preferred.

On Sept. 17, after Typhoon Choi-Wan devastated Alamagan and Agrihan, a U.S Navy helicopter evacuated a family of six. Twelve persons were left behind.

The family of six who arrived earlier are still sheltered at the Red Cross center but they are expected to move out this week.

Based on the preliminary interviews they conducted, Tenorio said the victims would want to go back to the Northern Islands.
