NZ trade minister’s Pacific trip canceled

PAPEETE (Tahitipresse) — New Zealand’s trade minister was to tour Pacific islands in July but the trip has been canceled, according to Bronwyn Shanks, New Zealand vice consul in New Caledonia, during an official visit in French Polynesia.

The trip is not possible anymore because the date for the New Zealand general elections has switched to July 27.

During her stay in French Polynesia, Bronwyn Shanks met Tourism and Environment Minister Brigitte Vanizette. Tahiti is interested by the means used in New Zealand for environmental protection. Vanizette feels some of these measures could also be applied to the islands of French Polynesia.

About 8,000 visitors came from New Zealand last year to visit Tahiti and her islands. Shanks also took part in the meeting organized this week by the Tahitian minister of education to select students who will get a financial aid. This financial support will allow them to study in New Zealand. Four candidates studying tourism have been selected.
