Obama Guam visit set for March 22

“Although the president delayed his trip, nothing much has changed as far as logistics,” the source said, adding that the president will stay one night at the Westin Resort and Spa.

Some local lawmakers expressed frustrations over the lack of concrete information regarding the presidential  visit.

Sen. Judi Guthertz said she would be disappointed if the president’s intent is just to stop over without engaging with members of the community.

Speaker Judi Won Pat said she hoped for more information since there are activist groups that have contacted her, hoping to address the president.

Last week, the White House announced that Obama’s Asian tour was postponed to push his healthcare reform bill that is currently being hotly debated. Because of the delay, the first family will not accompany the president on his Asia tour.

On March 3, Kurt M. Campbell, assistant secretary of the Department of State’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said while on Guam, Obama will visit with troops and meet with Gov. Felix Camacho to discuss ways to revitalize the economy

while protecting the environment.

The president’s intent is to further strengthen “our cooperation with our Pacific partners.”
