“We drafted this proposed rezoning of Obyan area just to appease everybody for now and we will maybe address other rezone requests in the future on a case by case basis,” he said.
He said the Zoning Board did its best to study the proposal to classify the Obyan area as an industrial zone.
But the Legislature, he added, “came up with a better idea so let them do it and tell us what they want.”
At the same time Blanco asked whether rezoning Obyan from industrial to mixed commercial needed a public hearing.
According to Assistant Attorney General Kate Fuller, the Zoning Board’s legal counsel, the law doesn’t discuss whether there should be a public hearing, but added that lawmakers should know how to deal with their constituents regarding zoning issues.
Fuller said she doesn’t know why the Legislature wanted to rezone the area into mixed commercial when they have plenty of mixed commercial zones on island already.
Blanco said his concern is to get the text amendment to the zoning law approved by the Legislature.
