The new municipal council building is next to the U.S. Postal Service.
OFFICIALS gathered at the future site of the new Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council building on Thursday in Chalan Kanoa for a groundbreaking ceremony.
The building is an $850,505.81 project with a completion date of June 7, 2024. The contractor for the mostly federally funded project is R3A General Services LLC.
When completed, the new municipal council building will be standing next to the U.S. Postal Service Building.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang, lawmakers, cabinet members and other officials.
“This construction project has been way overdue,” said Apatang, who was the mayor of Saipan when Super Typhoon Soudelor severely damaged the old municipal council building in 2015.
“[Soudelor] woke many of us to the reality that mother nature is not to be reckoned with,” Apatang added.
