The event is part of the school’s month-long reading campaign.
“Our goal is to bring in active members of the community who are positive role models to read to the kids,” said OES principal Glenn Muna
Guest readers and speakers participating in the activity will sign their names on stars that will be displayed in the school hallway from Friday until the school year ends.
The concept is patterned after the Hollywood Walk of Fame where celebrities have stars along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
“We kind of went with the Hollywood idea of stars on the sidewalks. Displaying the stars so one can see that these are the community members that came in and read to our kids,” said Muna
Readers may bring the books they want to read or choose from the school’s book selections.
Those who wish to participate may include a short activity related to the story. Parents are also encouraged to join.
“We invited guest speakers to do presentations other than reading. So they can read and if they want to provide hands-on activities that are aligned with the reading,” said Muna
The storytelling activity is for kindergarten to sixth grade students in 23 classrooms.
There will be at least three readers per classroom are needed.
“Call us if you are interested to be a star. The more community members we get involved the better because it takes an entire community to educate a child,” said Muna.
This is the second year that the school will conduct the reading campaign.
“Last year we had the stars come in and it was very successful. We really want our kids to be inspired and to be motivated to read every day,” said Muna.
