Oleai school reading campaign involves parents

“Beginning Feb. 1 we had students read, every single day, with their parents, and the parents have to sign a log sheet acknowledging that their child read a certain number of pages,” said OES school principal Glenn Muna.

Through the activity, parents get to spend time with their children and learn from the books they read together while finding out their children’s interests.

“We have feedback from parents that their kids are actually excited to bring books home,” said Muna.

The parents also ask comprehension questions, before, during and after reading the book.

“It is also a time for the parent and the child to have a one on one time and carry on a conversation, and it can be done through the book,” said Muna.

The activity is also a competition among the grade levels — the class with the most number of pages read will receive a basket of books.

“This year we are taking a look at what else we can really do to promote literacy. That is why we had the reading competition,” said Muna.

At the end of the month, all log sheets will be gathered to determine the winning classes.

“We are hoping that the kids and parents do this throughout the year rather than just the whole month,” said Muna.
