Ombudsman to appeal dismissal of case

PORT VILA (RNZI/PINA) — Vanuatu Ombudsman Hannington Alatoa says he is surprised the chief justice has dismissed a case against 23 former and current politicians because of a non-appearance by lawyers.

Alatoa says it appears that a misunderstanding over dates is to blame for their lawyer not being present in court.

The 23 people were paid more than $8,000 each as compensation for being dismissed from parliament for boycotting it.
