One week amnesty for overdue books, other library materials

In celebration of National Library Week, Joeten-Kiyu is offering an amnesty program for delinquent borrowers from April 11 to 17.

“We would like to appeal to the community particularly to those library members who have unreturned books, magazines, DVDs, CDs and other library materials that they have borrowed to please return the materials to us and we will waive any fines and fees,” circulation unit head and acting librarian Erlinda Naputi said.

She said hundreds of books have not been returned to the library, some of them borrowed years ago.

“When a book or any library material becomes overdue, we contact the borrower to remind him or her about it, but there are borrowers who continue to ignore our calls,” she said.

If  books and other library materials have been lost, stolen, or damaged, the borrowers can come and pay for the items so the library can buy replacements.

“Overdue fines will be forgiven for all the materials that will be returned this week, and you can just drop the books into the book drop if you don’t want to return it to us personally,” Naputi said.

Amnesty week is not held every year.

“So please take this opportunity to do some spring cleaning and dig out those overdue library materials today,” she said.

Naputi is also inviting the community to visit the library and join the different activities for the whole week.

Today and until Friday, the library is offering training on résumé building and Power Point presentation in the information and technology section, book displays, read aloud and crafts at the Children of our Homeland Library, and quizzes and puzzles activities in the Homework Center. A family fun day is set from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday. For more information, call 235-7322 or e-mail [email protected].
