The one-hour show, which will start at 12 noon, aims to instill among students the importance of the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Event organizer Olivia Tebuteb said they are very happy with the huge turnout of student applicants who will be modeling and showcasing their own creations of gowns and attires made from recycled materials.
The clothes should be made from 90 percent recycled materials, Tebuteb added.
Most of the students who will participate will model their own creations while others have designers who are also students, she said.
The contestants are from Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School, Grace Christian Academy, Eucon International School, Mt. Carmel School and Kagman High School.
Prizes at stake are $500, $300 and $200 for the first, second and third placers.
Last year, DEQ hosted a “testing” trash fashion shoot at American Memorial Park but only five students participated.
“Last year was just a test of how the show would go. This is the first time that we will go full blast and, hopefully, we can get the participation of Tinian and Rota high schools next year,” Tebuteb said.
Working with Tebuteb is Leilani S. Deleon Guerrero, also of DEQ.
The Trashin’ Fashion Show is one of the numerous educational events DEQ is hosting to celebrate the 2011 Environmental Awareness Month which carries the theme “Invest in the Real Green: Our Environment.”
