Rautahi leader Jean-Christophe Bouissou said June 29 marked the day when Polynesia became a French possession in 1880.
“This is the first time since we somehow had problems between us that we gather again to show our faith in our relations with France,” he said.
Forum to discuss Fiji’s case
PORT VILA (Pacnews) —Fiji’s political issue will be taken to the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting in Cains, Australia by the Melanesian Spearhead Group, according to Radio Vanuatu.
The chairman of the MSG, Vanuatu Prime Minister Edward Nipake Natapei, confirmed that he is trying to convene an urgent summit later this month to address Fiji’s political situation prior to the Forum Leaders’ meeting next month.
He said the way things are, Fiji can no longer participate in the Forum meeting and the Forum has no other option for dialogue with Fiji.
Australia awaits call to enforce climate law
CANBERRA (Pacnews) — Australian federal police officers are awaiting the call to become Australia’s climate cops, reports AAP.
Offenses under the government’s planned emissions trading scheme are likely to be akin to tax fraud, with cheats seeking to gain an unfair advantage over competitors, Australian Federal Police Association chief executive Jim Torr said.
“If you believe the scientists, this is necessary legislation and it is going to be important that it is enforced,” he added.
THE Pacific Water & Wastes Association, in collaboration with the Tonga Water Board, is holding its second annual Pacific Water Conference and Expo on the shores of Vava’u, Tonga.
The conference runs from July 30 to Aug. 3.
Other key sponsors and partners of the conference include the Asian Development Bank, the World Health Organisation and the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission.
The regional organization was founded in 1995 to support the water industry in the Pacific which is facing ongoing water resource challenges.
