Palau eyes foreign loan

He met with the Senate Committee on Ways and Means to discuss the government’s fiscal status.

Mariur said the senators assured him that they will work closely with the administration to approve any authorization required in tapping new funding sources.

The government’s unpaid obligations amount to $11 million, and include debts owed to international organizations and payments for bank loans.

Mariur said these debts need to be addressed.

The national government owes $1,663,974 to the state governments; $625,870 to component units and agencies; $1,741,255 to the Palau Public Utilities Corp. for electric bills; $31,972 to the Palau National Communications Corp.; $546,508 to the International Monetary Fund; and $370,755 in international dues.

The government also has accounts payable to the U.S. military’s civic action team in the amount of $62,500.

The government, moreover, owes $2,824,966 in loan payments, and $1,935,151 in  accounts payable to local vendors as well as payroll.
