Diaz, who owns a radio station, said Senate Bill 8-172 aims to protect people who are wrongly accused by anonymous letters.
“If this legislation is enacted into law no longer will the public suffer from false, libelous, or defamatory statements designed to mislead the public,” he added.
Diaz said his bill does not suppress the freedom of the press or expression.
“This only seeks to make people transparent, to make them responsible,” he added.
His bill will make publishers of newspapers liable for libelous letters to the editors.
According to Diaz, his bill will also protect anonymous writers who have legitimate societal complaint but who wish to remain anonymous.
The bill provides guidelines in publishing an anonymous letter.
